Is the planet full? Over 7 billion people currently live on Earth. Sixty per cent live in Asia, 15 per cent in Africa, 11 per cent in Europe, 9 per cent in Latin America and the Caribbean, 5 per cent in North America, and less than 1 ... -- What are the impacts of population growth? Can our planet support the demands of the ten billion people anticipated to be the world's population by the middle of this century? While it is common to hear about the problems of overpopulation, might there be unexplored benefits of increasing numbers of people in the world? How can we both consider and harness the potential benefits brought by a healthier, wealthier and larger population? May more people mean more scientists to discover how our world works, more inventors and thinkers to help solve the world's problems, more skilled people to put these ideas into practice? In this book, leading academics with a wide range of expertise in demography, philosophy, biology, climate science, economics and environmental sustainability explore the contexts, costs and benefits of a burgeoning population on our economic, social and environmental systems.

This book brings together research on the relations between people and the planet's living and non-living resources. Its three main foci include the methodological approaches to the study of relationships between people and land use, patterns of consumption, population trends and the availability of food and water resources; an examination of evidence of disequilibria in increasing conflicts, migrations, and over-crowding; and a search for balance between people and the other elements of the biosphere through understanding and overcoming destructive forces.

Framework Convention on Climate Change to support states in the development and implementation of policy. This Process, to include the full range of stakeholders -- incl. state rep., internat. human rights and humanitarian agencies, and civil soc. -- would make certain that all mitigation and adaptation policies incorp. international human rights standards and best practices. In so doing, this Process would advance the UN¿s goal to promote peace and security through the protection of human rights.

The prevailing view of nature has begun to move away from a traditionally Western humans-apart-from-nature attitude toward one that sees humans as a part of nature. Don E. Marietta describes these changes and what he perceives as a philosophical shift toward new holistic models of environmental ethics. He supports a critical holism that stresses the moral importance of the interrelationship of human beings, animals, plants, and non-living things in their common dependence on the ecosphere. Considering that this humanistic approach to ethics recognizes a shared responsibility to the whole system of nature, Marietta explores the apparent conflict between environmental holism and the interests of individuals, incorporating the perspectives of ecofeminism, anthropocentrism, contextualism, and pluralism. This approach produces an ecologically enlightened position that calls for a commitment to protecting planet Earth, while recognizing that "even though it may not be easy or simple, we can live according to a humanistic and holistic ethic, one which seeks the good for people and for the planet." Author note: Don E. Marietta, Jr. is Adelaide R. Snyder Distinguished Professor of Ethics and Professor of Philosophy at Florida Atlantic University.
The Impact of Overbuilding on People and the Planet

Type: BOOK - Published: 2019-02-01 - Publisher: Cambridge Scholars Publishing

This book challenges the status quo where profligate building and urban development is described as ‘green’ and ‘low carbon’, exposing a number of ‘elephants in the big green room’ that severely impact upon society and the environment. It questions the ethics, equity and sustainability of continued growth of the building stock in industrialized contexts amid diminishing demand, whilst the developing world is deprived of basic resources and infrastructure. Even a ‘circular’ built environment may not go far enough, when dramatic reduction in consumption of resources is required to meet ‘sufficient’ service levels. More socio-economic value may be derived from built resources by their stewardship, adaptation, reuse and equitable sharing, while ameliorating the adverse impacts of overconsumption. By taking a wider perspective of a sustainable built environment, the text—illustrated by case studies from the Olympics and nine countries—reframes the policy debate and reforms current approaches through a new theory and manifesto. It will appeal to policy makers, architects, urban designers, educators, students and green building practitioners.

Economics for People and the Planet, a collection of essays by James K. Boyce on the environment, inequality and the economy, argues that there is not an inexorable trade-off between advancing human well-being and having a clean and safe environment. The goal of economic policy should be to grow the good things that improve our well-being and environmental quality and reduce the bad things that harm humans and nature. To reorient the economy for these ends, we will need to achieve a more egalitarian distribution of wealth and power. Global climate change – the most pressing environmental challenge of our time – adds urgency to this task and creates historic opportunities for moving towards a greener future.

Type: BOOK - Published: 2016-12-15 - Publisher: The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI)

Second in the series of TERI’s annual flagship publication on global sustainable development, People, Planet and Progress Beyond 2015 examines six critical issues of the Planet (climate change, ozone layer depletion, loss of biodiversity, desertification, unsustainable use of natural resources, and environmental pollution) and six crucial issues of the People (food security and safety, health and well-being, education and learning, sustainable habitat, energy for all, and social justice and equity), reviews the Progress made by various regions and countries of the world on each of these issues, and analyses the challenges and opportunities ahead, particularly in the contexts of post-2015 global development agendas, ushered by the Paris Climate Agreement, UN Sustainable Development Goals, and Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction. The analysis is supported by primary data from authentic sources on a wide range of indicators that make the volume an invaluable resource material on contemporary discourses on global development.

Type: BOOK - Published: 2017-07-05 - Publisher: Routledge

Humanity's relationship to nature is central to the work of Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, an influential priest and scientist of the twentieth century. Teilhard believed that spiritual development must be viewed alongside material development and that evolutionary theory lies at the heart of humanity's understanding of its place in the world. 'Pierre Teilhard de Chardin on People and Planet' argues that Teilhard's cosmic mysticism and intense interest in both cosmological and evolutionary sciences are highly relevant to current debates about how best to construct a meaningful spirituality. The book offers a critical revision of Teilhard's thought in the light of current debates in evolutionary science, eco-theology and environmental ethics. The essays present fresh interpretations of Teilhard's work and point to the significance of his thought in the contemporary study of science and religion.
