It does not solely express love, but it even induces love. Yet this was followed up with more experiments to find out what effect other cues may have on loving feelings. -- The book provides a new look at the everyday relationship between psychological processes and extraordinary aspects of ordinary phenomena. Why should we deal with ordinary things? People’s life is made of everyday practical, taken-for-granted things, such as driving a car, using money, listening music, etc. When you drive from home to workplace, you are migrating between contexts. Is this an empty space you are crossing, or the time you spend into the car is something meaningful? In psychological terms, things have, at least, three levels of existence, a material, a symbolic and an affective one. The underlying idea is that the symbolic elaboration of everyday things is characterized by the transcendence of the particular object-sign, leading to the creation of more and more complex sign fields. These fields expand according to an inclusive logic up to dialogically and dialectically incorporate opposites (i.e. clean/dirty, transparent/opaque, hide/ show, join/divide, slow/fast, etc.). Even the meaning of “ordinary” and “extraordinary” follow such an inclusive logic: if you give a positive value to ordinary, extraordinary is rule-breaking; otherwise, if ordinary means trivial, extraordinary assumes a positive value. Besides, things are cultural artifacts mediating the experience of the world, the psychological processes and the construction of mind. Reflecting upon “things” is thus a more meaningful pathway to understand Psyche.

Love and Ordinary Things Marcy Goldman Poetry from the wheat field, dance floor and heart “I like to think I’m wearing my heart on my sleeve in service to the common good. My recipes are to feed the body but my poems are to nourish the soul”. What sort of poetry comes from being a master baker, mother of sons, wheat’s handmaiden, tango dancer, mistress of scents and a woman with a Jane Austen romantic bent? Personal, riveting, evocative, sensual poems that tell a tale from kitchen to fields of grain to the baseball diamond, to dance floors with worn patinas of unending tangos danced till midnight and a heart that takes no prisoners. This is a special and highly personal collection of poetry of the baker & cookbook author who danced tango in cowboy boots and baked bread in a frilly apron and raised three boys into men along the way. It includes poems of all seasons and reasons, light on tears but rife with heart and spirit. It is one person’s unique recipe for life and love in poems. About Marcy Goldman Marcy Goldman, is a professional pastry chef, cookbook author, writer and the spirit and creative voice of www.BetterBaking.com. Since 1997, Betterbaking.com has been the online home of the baker who is also, as it turns out, is a wordsmith and poet as well as the village baker. Before embarking on her work in the world of food, Goldman had several of her poems published in the New York Times. But as food, motherhood, and life as we know it intervened the poems got put aside. Here at last, is a treasured collection of the poems from Goldman’s multi-faceted world. Goldman has been a frequent guest on Martha Stewart Sirius and a contributor to the New York Times, Washington Post, Bon Appetit and Epicurious. Goldman’s best-selling cookbooks include When Bakers Cook, A Passion for Baking, A Treasury of Jewish Holiday Baking, The Best of Betterbaking.com and The Baker’s Four Seasons. 'It was a tough, wiry wig with plenty of personality. It rode around on his head like an animal. It was a vigorous brown. I was very fond of it as a child. I thought that it liked me back.' Anne Enright's extraordinary first novel is narrated by Grace, a TV producer, whose life is transfigured when she answers the door to a fully-fledged angel. Stephen was a bridge-builder in Canada before he killed himself, but now that he has come to stay with Grace he spends the night hanging by the neck in her shower, to help himself think. Needless, to say, she falls in love, moving steadily from the spiritual to the anatomical. Meanwhile as her TV day job on the 'Love Quiz' begins to spiral out of control, on the other side of her life is her father, benign, bewigged and stricken by a stroke -apparently mad but probably the sanest person in her life. As the three worlds meet and merge in a forest of contradictions, we watch Grace take the pacific path from cynicism to innocence, as all around her the novel thinders to a conclusion.

G. K. Chesterton is remembered as a brilliant creator of nonsense and satirical verse, author of the Father Brown stories and the innovative novel, The Man who was Thursday, and yet today he is not counted among the major English novelists and poets. However, this major new biography argues that Chesterton should be seen as the successor of the great Victorian prose writers, Carlyle, Arnold, Ruskin, and above all Newman. Chesterton's achievement as one of the great English literary critics has not hitherto been fully recognized, perhaps because his best literary criticism is of prose rather than poetry. Ian Ker remedies this neglect, paying particular attention to Chesterton's writings on the Victorians, especially Dickens. As a social and political thinker, Chesterton is contrasted here with contemporary intellectuals like Bernard Shaw and H. G. Wells in his championing of democracy and the masses. Pre-eminently a controversialist, as revealed in his prolific journalistic output, he became a formidable apologist for Christianity and Catholicism, as well as a powerful satirist of anti-Catholicism. This full-length life of G. K. Chesterton is the first comprehensive biography of both the man and the writer. It draws on many unpublished letters and papers to evoke Chesterton's joyful humour, his humility and affinity to the common man, and his love of the ordinary things of life.

Saint Francis of Assisi (1181-1226) was an Italian Catholic friar, deacon and preacher. He founded the men's Order of Friars Minor, the women's Order of Saint Clare, the Third Order of Saint Francis and the Custody of the Holy Land. Francis is one of the most venerated religious figures in history. In Chesterton's portrayal St. Francis is a mysterious figure and a man of paradox. Putting him and his life into historical perspective, Chesterton describes why his asceticism was necessary for his cause and what drove him to his life.

He wrote on philosophy, ontology, poetry, plays, journalism, public lectures and debates, literary and art criticism, biography, Christian apologetics, and fiction, including fantasy and detective fiction. Chesterton is often referred to as the "prince of paradox". Whenever possible, Chesterton made his points with popular sayings, proverbs, and allegories—first carefully turning them inside out. Chesterton is well known for his reasoned apologetics and even some of those who disagree with him have recognized the universal appeal of such works as Orthodoxy and The Everlasting Man. Chesterton, as a political thinker, cast aspersions on both progressivism and conservatism, saying, "The whole modern world has divided itself into Conservatives and Progressives. The business of Progressives is to go on making mistakes. The business of the Conservatives is to prevent the mistakes from being corrected." Chesterton routinely referred to himself as an "orthodox" Christian, and came to identify such a position more and more with Catholicism, eventually converting to Roman Catholicism from High Church Anglicanism. George Bernard Shaw, Chesterton's "friendly enemy" said of him, "He was a man of colossal genius".
